Shuri Castle Park
Shuri Castle was the royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is still unknown when Shuri Castle was originally built but it has been rebuilt more than once having burned down several times. The place was designated a national treasure as early as 1924. During WWII, the castle was completely destroyed by the US army; and after the war, the University of the Ryukyus campus was built on the site totally obliterating the last remnants of the castle. After the campus was transferred, Shuri Castle was restored and opened as Shuri Castle Park in 1992.
