Tatami-ishi in Ojima
Tatami-ishi means "mat-like stones." These stones appear at low tide on the south seashore of west Ojima Island, east of Kume Island. The stones look like tortoise shells, and more than 1,000 of these cover the area; hence, their "mat-like" quality. Their pentagon or hexagon shapes were acquired while the lava that would eventually turn into stones was in the process of getting cold. The tatami-ishi is designated as a natural treasure by the prefecture.
