Onna Nabi
is a famous female poet of Ryukyu tanka. Ryukyu tanka is verse peculiar
to Okinawa. Though it is said she was born in 1713 and died in 1761, there
is no evidence of her existence. Her liberal, feel-at-home and frank style
verse still attracts many people. By reflecting her popularity, we can
find several verse monuments in Onna Village, which is pointed out to
be her hometown.
