A Huge Shisa of Tomori
A huge Shisa carved in stone stands on the hill where the Jiri Castle was located. The Shisa was put up in 1689 to ward off fires which had repeatedly devastated Okinawa in the past. It is the biggest and oldest Shisa in Okinawa, and has been designated as one of the tangible cultural properties of the Prefecture. The Shisa today, aside from watching over the village, also stands as a silent monument to the devastations of war because it still shows traces of several bullet marks it received during the Battle of Okinawa.
