Peace Memorial Park
The Peace Memorial Park is built on Mabuni, the last scene of heavy fighting between the Japanese and US armies in the Battle of Okinawa. Tens of thousands of civilians and Japanese soldiers met their tragic end in this battle. In the park, there are many shrines commemorating the war dead such as the Cornerstone of Peace (Heiwa-no-ishiji), the Peace Museum, and the Peace Memorial Hall. An annual memorial service for all the war dead in Okinawa is held in this park every 23rd of June-the day the Battle of Okinawa ended.
